Fairview High is returning all but three wrestlers from the State Champion Wrestling Team.

Fairview High Head Wrestling Coach James “Bubba” Derrick is entering his ninth year leading the Yellow Jacket Wrestling program – and season eight was great!

With a 22-3 record last year, Fairview wrestlers won the A/AA State Duals Championships and the wrestling team’s first State Championship. It was also Fairview High School’s first TSSAA Team State Championship.

Derrick believes the team’s past success just builds momentum and goals for the program’s future. And that success has Derrick more driven to see his wrestlers do their very best.

“The expectations remain high as the Jackets are returning eight state placers,” said Derrick. With the exception of three graduated seniors, the entire team is returning to the mat this season.

Coach Derrick said, “Expectations are high again this season. We start every year with the goal of winning the State Duals Championship, and this year we will have that same goal as well as winning the Traditional State Championship.”

Leading the Jackets will be Malachi Bennett, Kendrick Curtis and Jacob Clevenger, three returning state runner- ups that are looking for their first Individual State Championship this season.

New faces to watch this season include Peyton Mitchell, Logan Baxley, Thatcher Pittman, Henri Mugnier and Jordan Palmer who are all rising freshmen.

Derrick noted the wrestling season has something new for fans. The first ever WilCo Super Duals is scheduled for Wednesday, December 29. “It will be a great mid-season duals tournament with some of the best Middle Tennessee wrestling programs going toe to toe,” said Derrick.

As for changes this year, the TSSAA re-alignment will bring former AAA schools into Fairview’s division this season. In addition to the Jackets’ normal region tournaments, they have added a Section Tournament for both duals and traditional tournaments which will determine state qualifications.

With no restrictions on attendance, Derrick said, “We look forward to having the support of our fans and community at our home and away matches and especially for Region, Section and State Championships.”

Assisting Derrick in coaching the Jackets will be Denny Mitchell and Biff Curtis, who have coached several of this year’s juniors and seniors for the last eight years.
