Too many holiday events is a good problem to have unless you are trying to plan the 40th Annual Fairview Christmas Parade with a theme “Magic and Mayhem.”

While parade mayhem has already stirred up social media posts, it may take some magic to pull off a parade this year.

The parade was previously always held on the first Saturday in December each year. In recent years, the scheduling process has changed. In 2017, the event transitioned from a daytime parade to an after-dark parade. In 2020, the parade down the boulevard became a reverse parade through Bowie Nature Park due COVID-19 safety measures.

This year, the Fairview Chamber of Commerce planned to return to a daytime parade on Saturday, December 11. However, that date has already been secured for the annual Shop with A Cop event. Both events require substantial police manpower and cannot be held concurrently.

The City of Fairview’s annual Tree Lighting Ceremony which kicks off the holiday season is scheduled for Saturday, December 4 from 2-6 p.m. with vendors and food trucks on site and the tree lighting ceremony to begin at 5:30 p.m.

In conjunction with the tree lighting, the Chamber will offer the inaugural Festive Fairview Tinsel Trail, a free trail of Christmas trees decorated by local businesses, organizations, groups or individuals, which opens December 4 and remains open daily through January 2.

In addition, the City of Fairview will host the first-ever Holiday Wonders at Bowie Park, a holiday lights, sound, laser and video magic drive-through exhibit. It will be open Thursday through Sunday from November 26 to January 9 from 6-10 p.m.

Chamber and city leaders are currently trying to find a solution for as the saying goes “the parade must go on!” A Fairview Christmas Parade discussion is on the agenda for Thursday night’s city commission meeting which starts at 7 p.m. Thursday night’s work session at 6 p.m. will also include a discussion on the city’s urban growth boundary.
