The Fairview High School Yellow Jacket Football Team recently put their skills to the test in the off-season by competing in their annual Strength and Speed Competition before the dead period.

Demonstrating the improvements achieved through conditioning, the players showed their competitive spirit and realized the necessity of training.

The Jackets’ speed competition was based off the 5-10-5 drill and their 40 yard time.

The 5-10-5 shuttle drill consists of quick directional changes in a linear plane.

The 40-yard dash assesses speed and ability to accelerate with a timed straight-line sprint for a distance of 40 yards.

It has been proven that greater speed offers an huge advantage over opponents while also helping playing avoid contact and injuries.

The Jackets’ strength competition was based off each players maximum weight lift in bench press and power clean. Muscle training can not only increase an athlete’s performance, but also protect their muscles and joints when they compete in live games during the regular season.
