MSF_FHS boys soccer 2021 schedule

Fairview High School Head Boys Soccer Coach Shane Smith is ready to see the Yellow Jackets’ 2021 season kick off. After their 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so are the players and Jacket soccer fans.

Smith said the Fairview Boys soccer team will be relatively inexperienced on the varsity soccer field this year. That is due to a combination of the COVID-19 pandemic and losing players who have graduated the last two years.

“Most of the current varsity squad would have seen significant time on the field last season; however, due to only playing pre-season games last school year, very few of our current squad members have significant varsity experience,” explained Smith.

He is quick to say they are not hitting the reset button on their program. “Rather, we are confident that the strength of our JV schedule from the past few seasons will impact our current starters,” Smith said.

While only time will tell who steps up to be the Jackets’ major threats, the team intends to get behind the senior leadership of Mathew Stevens and junior standout Jose Perez.

Here’s a brief bio on the Yellow Jackets starting players.

Jose Perez — Junior — 5 goals and 3 assists as a freshman; however, only played in 11 games due to breaking his ankle. He came back and played a limited amount of time in FHS’ State Semi-Final appearance. Coach Smith noted, “This season, we anticipate the majority of our offense to flow through him at the center mid position.”

Mathew Stevens — Senior — 5 goals and 1 assist as a sophomore. Mathew was moved to the varsity squad during FHS’ playoff run his freshman year. As a sophomore, Mathew played as a relief player who played every position throughout the season. Matthew is the overall team captain. “This season, he will be anchoring our defense as our center back,” said Coach Smith.

Rylan Skelton — Junior — No varsity stats; however, would have played defense as a sophomore. He will be playing left outside mid and occasional striker this season.

William Kozin — Junior — No varsity stats; however, would have played as a relief center mid or striker as a sophomore. He will be playing defensive center mid and occasional striker this season.

Mason Dowdy — Junior — Has played in 5 varsity games; however, no goal/assist stats at this point. Mason is the co-captain. “Our most vocal player, he will be playing as our other center back. He will carry the responsibility of organizing the team on the field,” stated Coach Smith.

Smith is in his sixth season leading the Fairview Yellow Jacket Boys Soccer Team. He will be assisted by Ron King, who is returning as assistant varsity coach for his sixth season.

The staff was expanded a few years ago to also include Adam Forester as the head JV coach and goalkeeping coach. He is joined by Fairview High alumnus Jeffrey Perez, who is currently a volunteer.

While the Jackets did not play any official games during the 2020 season, the Jackets ended the 2019 season in the State Semi-Finals. Excited about the opportunity to play in 2021, the team is eager to take the field and score some big wins for their fans.

The Jackets were scheduled to host Nashville Christian on Tuesday for their home opener. Game results were not available at press time. They will travel to Battle Ground Academy on Friday afternoon.

You can catch the soccer action at Fairview High on Thursday, April 1 when the Jackets host Hillwood. For more game dates and times, see the schedule box.
