COVID requirements, fan seating restrictions and a stormy weather delay did not waver the Fairview Yellow Jackets in their quest to win their 2020 football season opener Friday night on the road.
Fairview's offense and defense came ready for combat against their cross-county rival the Page High Patriots to win the Battle of 840 and regain control of the prestigious trophy.
Leading the way for the Jacket offense was #22 Logan Nardozzi with 19 carries, 157 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Fairview's Riley Bennett was solid in the quarterback position, completing over half his pass attempts. FHS Head Coach Chris Hughes said, “Bennett did really well for the opening game."
The Jackets’ offense recorded 14 first downs and 246 yards rushing while Fairview’s defense holding the Patriots to five first downs and six rushing yards.
Nardozzi’s first trip into the end zone came with 3:58 remaining in the first quarter, giving the Jackets momentum and a 6-0 lead. A few minutes later, officials called for a game delay due to weather with players, coaches and fans hustled inside until the threat moved out of the area.
When action resumed, Fairview’s defense held tough, halting the Patriots’ attempts to march down field. With 7:35 remaining in the second, Nardozzi returned to the end zone from 35 yards to advance Fairview’s lead to 12-0.
Bennett completed a pass to #6 Morgan Jean with 4:58 left in the third quarter. Jean ran the ball 16 yards for the Jackets’ third touchdown pushing the Jackets to 18-0. Hughes noted another big play in the third quarter was a pick by #7 Bryce Fannin. The Patriots only score came in the fourth quarter with a field goal.
The Patriots offense struggled through much of the game as the Jackets’ defense was swarming. A fierce defensive line handed out some solid tackling to hold the Patriots to only 137 total yards through four quarters of play.
A non-district game, it was a huge win for the Jacket Football program and returns the Battle of 840 trophy to the Nest for the next year.
The Jackets host East Hickman Friday night, August 28 with 7 p.m. game time.
