If you were looking for a great way to experience the true meaning of Memorial Day, you could have visited any number of Fairview area cemeteries.

Thanks to a joint effort between the Fairview American Legion Post 248 and more than a dozen community volunteers all Fairview area veteran graves were decorated for the holiday.

Tara Bowman-Kelley, Post Adjutant for Post 248, reached out via social media to the community, seeking volunteers to adopt a cemetery and place flags on veteran graves for Memorial Day. Within 24 hours, Bowman-Kelley announced, “All cemeteries claimed!”

The Fairview American Legion and Fairview High School JROTC cadets usually host a Memorial Day ceremony at Hudgins Cemetery off Deer Ridge Road. However, due to the safety practices encouraged during the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony has been cancelled.

“The American Legion won’t be doing a Memorial Day Ceremony as we have done in the past with JROTC. With COVID-19, we would like to just limit it (cemetery flag placement) to the families helping,” explained Bowman-Kelley.

The volunteers, which include individuals and families, posted flags donated by American Legion Post 248 veterans group. Each volunteer also received a map of their chosen cemetery which identified the veteran grave sites.

Roger and Andrea Miller were happy to volunteer their time and decided to take along their children and a few of their friends to help – and possibly teach all a life lesson about the real meaning behind Memorial Day.

The Miller crew placed flags at Hudgins Cemetery off Deer Ridge Road and Overby Cemetery off Sleepy Hollow Road.

Bowman-Kelley advised, “There may be more veterans than posted (on the map)…My hopes are to scout out the major cemeteries soon and get a better number and list of who is buried in those cemeteries.”

Flags were placed at 17 area cemeteries between Friday and Sunday to assure that all flags were ready for Memorial Day visitors.
