Fairview High School parents were alerted around 3 p.m. Friday afternoon that classes and sporting events have been cancelled due to increased absences related to the COVID-19 virus.
According to Carol Birdsong, WCS communications director, Friday’s attendance rate at Fairview High for students was only 67 percent.
Birdsong advised, “In consultation with the Health Department, due to the number of positive COVID-19 cases and number of students and staff in quarantine due to contact tracing, the Fairview High campus will be closed for the weekend after dismissal today.”
The alert also stated the campus will be closed for all weekend events including Friday night’s home football game against Waverly.
In-person learning has also been cancelled for Monday and Tuesday with all teachers and students advised to transition to remote learning.
“This closure will allow for cleaning and appropriate contact tracing by the Health Department to take place,” stated Birdsong.
Students not quarantined and in need wi-fi capability on Monday and Tuesday should reach out to their grade level principal or Dr. Kurt Jones for assistance.
Birdsong said WCS will reevaluate the situation at Fairview High School at the end of the day on Tuesday.
